Magistrate Court strikes out car theft charge against Naira Marley

A Lagos Magistrates Court has dismissed a car theft charge filed by the police against hip hop artist, Adeyemi Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, his two brothers and their cousin.




Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias who presided over the matter made the decision at the early hour today after receiving a settlement agreement between the complainant, Mr Adelekan Ademola and the four defendants.


It would be recalled that Marley, his two brothers Idris Fashola, 18; Babatunde Fashola, 24; and their cousin, Kunle Obere, 22 are defendants in the case and were arraigned on December16, 2019 but Marley was absent.


During the proceedings, the defendants pleaded not guilty and the court subsequently granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in like sum before adjourning further proceedings till  December 31st 2019. The magistrate had also ordered the Investigative Police Office (IPO) to produce Marley in court.


At the proceedings on the said date, Naira Marley again failed to show up in court and this compelled Magistrate Elias to order his appearance in court on the next adjourned date of January 14, 2020.


Mr Elias however struck out the four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, assault and obstructing the police from arresting Marley.


Though Marley was absent, but the other defendants were in court. The three defendants include, Idris Fashola, 18; Babatunde Fashola, 24; and Kunle Obere, 22, are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, assault and obstructing the arrest of Naira Marley.
